Along with Ataxia, I also have arthritis and anxiety. I don’t claim the last two because to me they are minor. They’re really minor compared to having Ataxia, it’s Cerebellar Ataxia, it’s Rheumatoid Arthritis and it’s social anxiety…
I am not comfortable talking about the sad and painful shit I go through daily and alone, so I won’t..yet. But I will..soon. Real SOON.
I never admitted to having anxiety until applying for the dog ๐ถ I didn’t know it was something that serious, so I didn’t talk about it ๐คท๐พโโ๏ธ
I think that mental health in the black community IS serious. It is something that is rarely talked about and alot of us view it as weak or less than..so we deal with it alone. We self treat. We deny. We suffer alone rather than seek help.
But in other news, I applied for a therapy dog ๐๐พ I applied before and I was denied so I applied again and mentioned the fact that I have arthritis..I forgot because I wasn’t having a flare up and I moved to the next step ๐ There’s alot of steps to finally get a companion but I want loyalty, no judgement..I want help. I wish to make life easier for me..and those steps seem so little compared to the things I go through on a daily basis.
Until next time..โ๐พ
Greetings Seven,
I feel you on not always wanting to talk about what you go through. It took me many years to even do so. As for the mental health in the Black community, this is a serious thing and many of us are doing all we can to normalize that getting help for mental and emotional things is positive for our overall well-being. I know it has helped me a lot especially after the emotional trauma I went through after experiencing sudden health issues. You can even choose to see a therapist of the same cultural background as more and more are entering the field. I really hope you get your therapy dog soon. I bet that would make a world of difference.
This pandemic put a lot of things on hold for me..including traveling to New York to get the dog, I have to do without for now.
Mental health especially in the black communities is very real and serious. Most of us don’t even know that we are suffering, therefore we do not seek help to get treated. We’re told to pray about it ๐ถ sometimes prayer does not work
